Sunset Sailing Cruises
Sunset sails and catamaran cruises around El Arco with sea lions, snorkeling and open bar
About This Experience
Why this is the one tour almost everyone should take
Plenty of Cabo tours are skippable. This isn't one of them. For about the price of a nice dinner, you sail past El Arco at golden hour, watch the sun drop into the Pacific from open water, and ride back under the first stars with a drink in hand. It's the single highest romance-per-dollar experience in Los Cabos, and it doubles as your Arch sightseeing — no separate boat ride needed.
The three tiers (and which to book)
Tier 1 — Sunset sail with open bar and snacks ($65–89). Two to three hours, 20–40 passengers, domestic open bar, chips/guacamole-level snacks. This is the sweet spot for most couples: the sunset is the same sunset from every boat.
Tier 2 — Sunset dinner cruise ($99–149). Adds a real Mexican buffet dinner and often live music. Worth it if you want dinner handled — the food is genuinely decent (not resort-captive-audience decent, actually decent). The pirate-ship dinner cruise sits in this tier with a show the kids will love and adults will tolerate.
Tier 3 — Luxury/small-group sail ($150–250+). Under 20 passengers, premium bar, plated dinner or chef-prepared fajitas, crew that remembers your name. Book this for anniversaries, proposals, honeymoons — occasions where the boat matters as much as the sunset.
Skip the cheapest $45 sunset "cruises" — they're the same packed boats as the daytime party cruises with the music turned down slightly. The sunset deserves better.
What the evening actually looks like
Board at the marina around 4:30–5:30 PM (winter boards earlier — sunset is just after 6 PM in December). You'll motor out along the coast, past the luxury resorts of the corridor, to Land's End. The boat slows at El Arco for photos — this is the money shot, golden light on the rock formation with the sun behind it. Then sails into the Pacific as the sun drops. Most boats linger 15–20 minutes after sunset; the afterglow over the water is the part people remember. Ride back along the coastline lights, dock by 8–8:30 PM, and you're in time for a late dinner in the marina if you took Tier 1.
What it costs (typical 2026 prices)
- Budget sunset sail: $45–65 per person
- Mid-range sail with open bar + snacks: $65–89 per person
- Dinner cruise with buffet + live music: $99–149 per person
- Luxury small-group sail: $150–250+ per person
- Private charter for two (2 hours): $600–1,200 total
Dock tax/marine park fee ($2–5) is sometimes added at check-in — legitimate, not a scam. Photographers sell photo packages ($30–60); decide before you board whether you care.
How to pick the right boat
- Match the boat to the occasion. Date night? Small sail. Family with kids? Pirate ship. Group of friends? Mid-range party-friendly catamaran.
- Check the passenger count, not just the price. A $75 ticket on a 25-person boat beats a $60 ticket on an 80-person boat every time.
- Open bar quality varies enormously. "Open bar" on a budget boat means beer, margaritas from mix, and rum punch. Premium boats pour real spirits. If cocktails matter, read reviews mentioning the bar specifically.
- Live music is a plus, a DJ is a warning. Saxophone or guitar at sunset: lovely. A DJ taking requests: you're on a party boat wearing a sunset costume.
What to bring
A light jacket or wrap — it's 10 degrees cooler on the water after sunset, even in summer. Non-slip shoes (decks get wet; leave the heels at the hotel). Cash for crew tips ($10–20 per person is standard for good service) and the photo package if you want it. Seasickness pills if you're prone — the Pacific side can roll even on calm evenings; take them an hour before boarding.
Good to know
- Winter sunsets (November–February) are the most dramatic — clearer air, earlier golden hour. Summer sunsets are hazier but the evenings are warmer.
- Whale season bonus: December–April sunset cruises regularly spot whales breaching against the sunset. Captains will detour for a good sighting.
- Book 2–3 days ahead in high season; same-day usually works May–October.
- The "romantic" boats fill with proposal parties on weekends — if you want quiet, book a weekday sailing.
Frequently asked questions
What time do sunset cruises leave?
Boarding is typically 4:30–5:30 PM, timed so you're at Land's End for golden hour. Winter cruises board earlier (sunset ~6 PM); summer cruises board later (sunset ~8 PM). Your ticket confirmation gives the exact time — arrive 30 minutes early; boats leave on schedule.
Will I get seasick?
The bay side is usually calm. If you're sensitive, choose a larger catamaran (more stable), stay on deck in fresh air, and take motion-sickness medication an hour before boarding. The sail back along the coast is the smoothest part.
Is the dinner cruise food actually good?
On the established dinner-cruise operators, yes — legitimately good Mexican buffet (fajitas, fresh fish, handmade tortillas). It's not a Michelin star, but nobody walks off hungry or disappointed. If you're a serious foodie, take Tier 1 and eat at a marina restaurant after.
Can we do this with kids?
Yes — kids love the pirate ship and the bigger catamarans. Evening wind can be chilly for small children, so bring layers. Most operators charge reduced fares for kids under 12.
Is it worth it if we've already seen El Arco?
Honestly? Yes. The Arch from a water taxi at noon and the Arch at golden hour from a sailboat are different experiences. The sunset is the point; the Arch is the backdrop.
