Todos Santos Day Trip from Cabo San Lucas
A bohemian artist colony with Pacific beaches, the famous Hotel California, and authentic Mexican charm.
1 hour from Cabo San Lucas
Overview
Todos Santos is the antidote to Cabo's resort scene. This Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town) sits on the Pacific coast about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, offering a glimpse of old Baja—colonial architecture, working farms, world-class galleries, and a laid-back surfer vibe that feels worlds away from the marina.
The town has attracted artists, chefs, and expats for decades, creating an eclectic mix of galleries, boutique hotels, and farm-to-table restaurants. The main draw is wandering—through the historic center, along gallery row, past the famous Hotel California, and into hidden courtyards with craft cocktails.
While the beaches near Todos Santos are dramatic, most are not swimmable due to strong currents (they're famous for surfing, not swimming). Come for the culture, the food, and the escape—then head back to Cabo for sunset drinks and a swimmable beach.
Highlights
Hotel California
The famous (though unrelated to the Eagles song) hotel with a lively bar, gallery, and iconic signage perfect for photos.

Historic Mission
The Misión de Nuestra Señora del Pilar dates to 1733 and anchors the town plaza.
Suggested Itinerary
9:00 AM - Depart Cabo
Leave early to beat the heat and make the most of your day. The drive north on Highway 19 is scenic and easy.
Stop at the mirador (viewpoint) overlooking the Pacific for photos.
10:00 AM - Coffee & Gallery Walk
Start with coffee at Cafelix or Café Todos Santos, then explore the galleries around Calle Juárez and Centenario.
Many galleries are closed on Sundays—plan accordingly.
12:00 PM - Hotel California
Even if you're not staying, stop by for a drink at the bar, browse the on-site gallery, and snap the iconic sign.
The courtyard restaurant is good but pricey—consider it for drinks only.
1:00 PM - Lunch
Head to Jazamango for chef Javier Plascencia's Baja cuisine, or try Hierbabuena for organic farm fare.
Reservations recommended, especially on weekends.
3:00 PM - Cerritos Beach
Drive 10 minutes south to Cerritos for surfing, beach lounging at Cerritos Beach Club, or just Pacific views.
Rent a board from one of the local shops if you want to try surfing.
5:00 PM - Return to Cabo
Head back to Cabo in time for sunset at your resort or a dinner reservation.
The sunset drive can be stunning—pull over safely to enjoy it.
Practical Tips
- Rent a car for the most flexibility—Todos Santos isn't well-served by taxis or Uber.
- Bring cash. Many galleries and smaller shops don't take cards.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes for the cobblestone streets.
- Sunscreen is essential—there's little shade in the town center.
- Fill up on gas in Cabo before you leave.
- Consider a guided tour if you don't want to drive—several operators offer Todos Santos day trips.
When to Go
Year-round, but the best weather is November through May. Summer months (June-September) can be very hot. Saturdays are busiest; weekdays offer a more relaxed experience.
How to Get There
- By car: Take Highway 19 north from Cabo San Lucas. It's a straightforward 45-60 minute drive on a well-maintained road.
- By tour: Several Cabo tour operators offer guided day trips including transportation, a guide, and lunch.
- By taxi: Possible but expensive (~$100+ each way). Not recommended unless you negotiate a round-trip with wait time.
