La Paz Day Trip from Cabo San Lucas
The laid-back state capital with world-famous snorkeling, sea lion colonies, and the iconic Malecón waterfront.
2-2.5 hours from Cabo San Lucas
Overview
La Paz is everything Cabo isn't—and that's exactly why you should go. The capital of Baja California Sur feels like the 'real Mexico' with its working waterfront, genuine taquerías, and locals who seem surprised (but delighted) to see tourists. The pace is slower, the prices are lower, and the marine life is spectacular.
The city's crown jewel is Espíritu Santo Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve just offshore where you can swim with wild sea lions, snorkel pristine reefs, and kayak through mangroves. Even if you don't make it to the island, the Malecón (waterfront promenade) at sunset rivals any view in Los Cabos.
La Paz works as a long day trip (2-2.5 hours each way) or even better as an overnight. Either way, you'll discover why many travelers say La Paz is their favorite stop on the Baja peninsula.
Highlights
Swim with Sea Lions
At Los Islotes near Espíritu Santo Island, friendly sea lions swim right up to snorkelers—a bucket-list experience.
Espíritu Santo Island
UNESCO-protected island with pristine beaches, snorkeling, kayaking, and camping. Book a boat tour from La Paz.
The Malecón
A 5-km waterfront promenade lined with sculptures, restaurants, and sunset views over the Sea of Cortez.
Balandra Beach
Often ranked among Mexico's most beautiful beaches, with shallow turquoise waters and the iconic mushroom rock.
Authentic Seafood
From chocolate clams to fish tacos, La Paz's seafood scene is legendary and affordable.
Suggested Itinerary
6:30 AM - Early Departure
Leave Cabo early for the 2-hour drive to La Paz via Highway 1. The road is well-maintained with beautiful desert scenery.
Fill up on gas in Cabo and bring snacks—limited stops along the way.
9:00 AM - Espíritu Santo Tour
Join a boat tour to Espíritu Santo Island. Most tours include snorkeling at Los Islotes with sea lions, beach time, and lunch.
Book in advance through Fun Baja or Espíritu Baja Tours. Tours run 6-8 hours.
Alternative: Balandra Beach
If you're not doing an island tour, head to Balandra Beach (30 min north of La Paz) for the morning.
Arrive early—Balandra has limited parking and fills up by midday.
3:00 PM - Downtown La Paz
Explore the historic centro, browse shops, and grab a late lunch at Bismark (famous for seafood) or Tailhunter Cantina.
Try the chocolate clams (almejas chocolatas)—a La Paz specialty.
5:30 PM - Malecón Sunset
Walk the Malecón as the sun sets over the bay. Stop for a margarita at Harker Board Co. or La Miserable.
The sculptures along the Malecón make great photo ops.
7:00 PM - Return to Cabo
Head back to Cabo. The drive is easy but dark—watch for livestock on the road.
Consider staying overnight in La Paz if the long drive feels daunting.
Practical Tips
- Book Espíritu Santo tours at least 2-3 days in advance, especially in high season.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen—the marine reserve is protected.
- La Paz is more affordable than Cabo—take advantage of lower prices for food and souvenirs.
- The drive is long but scenic. Consider an overnight stay to fully experience the city.
- Download offline maps—cell service is spotty on Highway 1.
- Bring a good underwater camera for the sea lion snorkeling.
When to Go
October through June for the best weather and marine life visibility. Whale sharks visit from October to April. Summer months are hot but less crowded.
How to Get There
- By car: Take Highway 1 north from Cabo San Lucas. It's about 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic in San José del Cabo.
- By bus: Aguila buses run between Cabo and La Paz several times daily (~3 hours, very affordable).
- By tour: Several operators offer La Paz day trips, though you'll have less flexibility than driving yourself.
- By ferry: La Paz is also the departure point for ferries to mainland Mexico (Mazatlán, Topolobampo).
