East Cape Day Trip from Cabo San Lucas

Baja's wild side with empty beaches, world-class fishing, and off-the-grid adventure along the Sea of Cortez.

1-2 hours from San José del Cabo (depending on destination)

    Overview

The East Cape is where the old Baja still lives. This rugged stretch of coastline between San José del Cabo and La Paz remains largely undeveloped, offering empty beaches, world-class sportfishing, and a pace of life that feels decades removed from the resort scene.

The 'Camino Cabo Este' (Highway 1 East) was only fully paved in recent years, and the region still feels like a frontier. Small fishing villages like Los Barriles, Buena Vista, and Cabo Pulmo dot the coast, each with their own character and devoted following of repeat visitors.

This is Baja for adventurers—kiteboarders, fishermen, divers, and anyone seeking solitude. A day trip gives you a taste, but many visitors find themselves planning a return visit before they've even left.

    Highlights

    Los Barriles

The East Cape's hub—a small town famous for kiteboarding, sportfishing, and a tight-knit expat community.

    Empty Beaches

Miles of undeveloped coastline with barely a footprint. Bring supplies and have a beach to yourself.

    World-Class Fishing

The East Cape is legendary for roosterfish, dorado, marlin, and yellowfin tuna.

    Kiteboarding

Los Barriles has consistent winds from November to March, making it a premier kite destination.

    Authentic Villages

Tiny communities like La Ribera and Buena Vista offer a glimpse of traditional Baja life.

    Suggested Itinerary

8:00 AM - Depart San José

Head east on Highway 1, turning onto the coastal road toward Los Barriles. The drive is scenic and easy.

Stop at the overlook before descending to the coast for stunning Sea of Cortez views.

    9:30 AM - Los Barriles

Arrive in Los Barriles, the main town on the East Cape. Grab breakfast at Lazy Daze or Caleb's Café.

If you're interested in fishing or kiteboarding, this is the place to arrange activities.

    11:00 AM - Beach Exploration

Drive south along the coast, stopping at any beach that catches your eye. Most are empty and unsigned.

Bring everything you need—there are no facilities on most beaches.

    1:00 PM - Buena Vista

Stop in tiny Buena Vista for lunch at a local restaurant. The fish tacos here are authentic and affordable.

Ask about the hot springs (Agua Caliente) in the hills above town.

3:00 PM - Continue to Cabo Pulmo or Return

Either continue south to Cabo Pulmo (30 min) for snorkeling, or start heading back to Cabo.

Cabo Pulmo deserves its own day trip—consider returning if you're short on time.

5:00 PM - Return via San José

Head back through San José del Cabo, perhaps stopping for dinner in the Art District.

The sunset drive along the coast is spectacular.

    Practical Tips

    • Rent a car with good clearance—some beach access roads are sandy or unpaved.
    • Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen. Services are limited outside Los Barriles.
    • Cell service is spotty to nonexistent on much of the East Cape.
    • Gas stations are scarce—fill up in San José before heading east.
    • The East Cape is more rugged than other areas—embrace the adventure.
    • Consider combining with Cabo Pulmo for a full day of exploration.

    When to Go

Year-round, but November through March is best for kiteboarding. Summer is hot but great for fishing. Avoid during hurricanes (August-October).

    How to Get There

    • By car: From San José del Cabo, take Highway 1 east toward La Paz, then turn south on the coastal road. Most of the route is paved.
    • By tour: Few operators run East Cape tours—this is DIY territory.
    • Note: Some roads beyond Cabo Pulmo remain unpaved and require 4WD in places.
