Cabo Pulmo Day Trip from Cabo San Lucas

A UNESCO marine park with North America's oldest coral reef, incredible diving, and an inspiring conservation success story.

2 hours from Cabo San Lucas (last 10km unpaved)

    Overview

Cabo Pulmo is a miracle. This tiny fishing village on the East Cape protects North America's oldest living coral reef (20,000 years old) and has become one of the world's greatest marine conservation success stories. After the local community banned fishing in 1995, marine life increased by over 460%.

Today, the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is a snorkeler's and diver's paradise. Schools of jacks number in the thousands, bull sharks patrol the depths, sea turtles glide past, and the reef itself teems with tropical fish. It's the closest thing to untouched ocean you'll find in the region.

The village itself is deliberately undeveloped—no paved roads, no hotels (just a few eco-cabins), and a proud community that chose conservation over commercialization. A day trip here is both a world-class ocean experience and an inspiring lesson in what's possible when people protect nature.

    Suggested Itinerary

    7:00 AM - Early Departure

Leave Cabo early—the drive is 2+ hours and you want to maximize time in the water.

The last 10km are unpaved. Go slow and watch for washouts after rain.

    9:30 AM - Arrive & Gear Up

Arrive in Cabo Pulmo village. Book a snorkel or dive trip with one of the local operators (Cabo Pulmo Sport Center, Cabo Pulmo Divers).

Book in advance during high season. Walk-ups are possible but risky.

    10:00 AM - Morning Snorkel/Dive

Head out on a boat to the best reef sites. Snorkel trips typically visit 2-3 spots; dives go to different depths.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen only—regular sunscreen damages the coral.

1:00 PM - Lunch in the Village

Return to the village for lunch. Options are limited but authentic—try El Caballero or La Palapa.

Bring cash. No ATMs in Cabo Pulmo and most places are cash-only.

2:30 PM - Beach Time or Second Dive

Relax on the beach, snorkel from shore at Los Arbolitos, or join an afternoon dive.

The shore snorkeling at Los Arbolitos is excellent and free.

    4:00 PM - Depart

Start the drive back to Cabo. Allow extra time for the unpaved section.

Stop in Los Barriles for dinner if you want to break up the drive.

    Practical Tips

    • Rent an SUV or high-clearance vehicle—the last 10km are unpaved and can be rough.
    • Bring reef-safe sunscreen ONLY. Regular sunscreen is banned and damages the reef.
    • Bring cash. There are no ATMs in Cabo Pulmo and most businesses are cash-only.
    • Book snorkel/dive trips in advance during high season (December-April).
    • Pack lunch if you're picky—restaurant options are limited.
    • Bring all water and supplies you'll need. There's one small tienda in the village.

    When to Go

Year-round, but visibility is best from August to November. Bull sharks visit November to March. Summer is hotter but less crowded.
